In any craft, there is noise. For the writer, noise is which words to choose, which way to order sentences, which way to order paragraphs. For the skateboarder, noise is foot placement, pressure, speed, timing, pedestrians, cops. Noise is not meant to be ignored. It’s meant to be sensed.
The beginner stays where they’re comfortable and works with less, because too much noise is overwhelming. Gradually the noise is increased. The beginner does less work while working with more.
The master stays where they’re comfortable and works with less, because extraneous actions and ego drown out the noise. Gradually the noise is decreased. The master does more work while working with less.
