When someone needs your support, ask yourself: does this person need human support, or tech support?
Tech support is specific. It’s concrete, technical, and full of instruction and details. Tech support is what you give to someone by saying, “Here’s what I would do if I were you.”
Human support is a hug, an embrace, eye contact, a smile. Human support is sympathy, empathy, companionship, the kind of support that fits the glove perfectly. Human support is what you give to someone by saying, “I’m sorry you’re going through that. I’ll be the canvas that you can paint your feelings onto.”
You don’t give tech support to someone who needs human support. You wouldn’t say, “Here’s what I would do if I were you,” to someone who just needs a hug.
Nor would you hug someone who just needs you to review their business proposal.
