It (isn’t) all about who you know

Apparently, it’s all about who you know.

I think that’s wrong.

It’s about what you can show to the people you know.

It’s about making a body of work. Which can be a decades long enterprise. All the more reason to start making things right now.

It’s about making a body of work while you make a network of bodies. And if you’re like me and you don’t like networking, I have good news: your work can do the networking for you. So make good work.

But your work doesn’t speak for itself. You have to define who your work is for so that you know exactly the kind of people you want to be reaching. And don’t fool yourself into believing that your work is for everyone because it’s not.

Making connections without having a body of work: “Hi. My name is _______. I want you to acknowledge that I exist.”

Making connections with a body of work: “Hi. My name is _______. This is some work that I’ve done. I finished some of this work without being paid a dime. I can show you what I’m working on right now and I can show you some failed projects and what I learned from those failures.”

What can you show to the people you know?
