Doing is in vogue

It’s fashionable to be always in the middle of something right now, I’ll get back to you later.

Idleness is the counterculture to the culture that tells us that we need to always be in the middle of something.

Because if we’re always in the middle of something, then we’re missing out on what’s happening in the margins of our lives.

Our loved ones are here in this margin, and they haven’t heard from us in awhile. Maybe we should call them. Maybe they’d like to hear about what’s been keeping us so busy lately.

And there’s opportunity over here in this margin, opportunity to get away from our work so that we can return to it with a fresh pair of eyes. Maybe we should take a break for a few minutes, or even a few days.

Maybe we’re more likely to get our “big break” after we’ve taken a big break.
