“Born in a diamond mine/ It’s all around you but you can’t see it.”
It’s an uplifting lyric in an unusually dark song by Arcade Fire (“Assisted suicide / She dreams about dying all the time”).
And it couldn’t be any closer to the truth. You were born in a diamond mine. The fact that you’re able to read these words is proof that you’re in the 1%.
“It’s all around you but you can’t see it.” Win Butler – the lead singer of Arcade Fire – is echoing Wittgenstein, who wrote, “One is unable to notice something because it is always before one’s eyes.” What’s right in front of us, and all around us, is that which blinds us the most.
If we were able to see everything that we so easily take for granted, we would go blind. Because though I’ve never seen one in person, I imagine that diamonds are rather bright.
