Portals in the Wall

The urge to escape from selfhood and the environment is in almost everyone almost all the time.

Aldous Huxley – Heaven and Hell

Eric Weinstein has a name for the escapes from selfhood. He calls them Portals. Aldous Huxley called them Doors in the Wall. Let’s combine the two and call them Portals in the Wall.

Some people are born with the ability to conjure up Portals in the Wall with the flick of their wrist. These people are visionaries.

Kanye West. Carl Jung. Christopher Nolan. David Choe. David Bowie. Steve Jobs. Richard David James. Thom Yorke. Hayao Miyazaki. Masaaki Yuasa. Satoshi Kon. Rodney Mullen.

All visionaries.

Other people have to try a little harder to find the Portals in the Wall. But once they find them, it’s only a matter of one foot in front of the other.

Trees. Flowers. Grass. Clouds. Foreign languages. Foreign foods. New ways of using the language of which you’re most familiar. Conversations with people who are smarter than you. The greatest albums ever recorded. The greatest books ever written. The greatest movies ever made. Brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand. Eating pizza with a fork. These are escapes from selfhood.

If you’re so bored it’s frustrating, look for the Portals in the Wall.
