Utopia is here (we don’t like it)

The utopist is constantly proving himself wrong. Unlimited information at the flick of a finger, clean water for less than a cantaloupe, oh, and air conditioning. We have the miracle of air conditioning! — Jesus, what more could we ask for? We already have everything we could ever dream of. And yet we’re setting ourselves on fire.

Utopia is here. We don’t like it. We don’t like it because unlimited information, clean water, and air conditioning cant solve our internal problems. As great as air conditioning is, it can’t teach us how to reconsider our information diet.

Technology and the ungoverned spread of ideas have bought us a lot of time. And so it’s up to us – as citizens of a utopia we take for granted everyday – to use this time wisely. Our default is to spend this time villainizing our neighbors, tipping stuff over, and cutting our families off at the knees.

I’m sure we can do better than that.
