You don’t see your favorite speaker for a surprise. You see your favorite speaker because you already get the joke.
Public speakers hardly ever come up with new things to say every night.
But comedians do.
Good comedians reinvent the wheel and paint it a different color.
Night after night. From city to city. New wheel. New color. Over and over again.
Public speakers, on the other hand, they have it easy. Public speakers get up on stage and say the same stuff they said last week. It doesn’t matter if they’re speaking in Fresno today and Portland tomorrow.
The goal of the public speaker is to make the message loud and clear to everyone who lives in Anywhere Town, Anywhere Country. Comedians don’t get that luxury. Comedians need to be sure that tonight’s material is fit for Fresno. Because what’s funny in Fresno is appalling in Portland.
