Against Mandatory Language

To enforce language is to kill everybody’s sense of uniqueness. The enforcement of a specific use of language is the enforcement of specific thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes. I must use these words, therefor I must think this way, therefor I must behave this way — just like everybody else. And if I’m speaking and acting like everybody else, how can I celebrate my uniqueness – that quality so promoted by so many advocates of New Progressive Words?

I may be wrong, but I can’t name one instance in which New Progressive Words helped marginalized groups land jobs and keep those jobs. But that’s because the motivation behind New Progressive Words isn’t economic opportunity for the disenfranchised. It’s about economic opportunity for those who promote New Progressive Words – two completely different demographics.
