How to Be a Failure

If you’ve made just one person laugh…

If you’ve brought just one person joy, or a smile…

If you’re a “one hit wonder”…

Then you are absolutely, by all measures, not a failure.

You’re not a failure if only 6 people read your blog while 7,999,999,994 people ignore you. You’re not a failure if 3 people sincerely laugh at your joke while the rest of the audience stays quiet. You’re not a failure if you hold doors open for people while your job application gets rejected again.

But if you’ve directed even an ant-sized modicum of time and energy to putting yourself above somebody else, to belittle somebody, to demean them, to insult and hurt them, to criticize their every move — then you are, absolutely, by all measures, a failure. It’s not that hard to avoid this fate. Simply choose otherwise.
