Authenticity isn’t a shortcut

Podcast, YouTube show, blog, newsletter. You won’t get it right the first time. “Just start,” they say. That’s only half of it. Just start, and keep going. Unless you start, you’ll never make progress. If you never keep going, you’ll never discover your stride.

This week I released episode 85 of the podcast. It took me 84 episodes, but I think I’ve finally found my stride. No notes, no posturing, no Forced Value Extraction.

It takes time to find your stride in any creative outlet. It takes time to find what the cool kids call “your authentic voice.” Authenticity isn’t a shortcut. But, despite how long it takes to kick in, authenticity is the shortest route to fulfilment.

Turns out, it takes a very long time to get better at being you. Strange, because the only one who can be you is you, yet when you start being you, like when you start anything, you suck at it. You’d think that since you’re you you’d be half decent at being you. No. That’s not how it works. Especially if you’ve spent the last 9 months trying to be like somebody else.

Stop trying to be like somebody else. How many more times does some cheesy self-help guru/blog/Creativity Mom Book need to tell you this?

also yeah I know there’s a book called KEEP GOING and you’ve heard this advice b4 but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
